Composting

Composting is possibly one of the best things you can do for your yard and garden. It makes the soil better every time you add more. It gives the plants and trees in your garden the best possible food while protecting them from drying out or freezing. Compost not only provides a layer of insulating nourishment, it helps keep away the weeds (which prefer contact with soil for starting their growth). Best of all, it lets you recycle almost everything organic from your house and yard.

Lots of people never get started with composting because it sounds like too much work, or maybe they think their garden is too small and there's not enough room to establish a composting setup. Another concern is the compost may smell bad and attract rodents and other "unwanted" pests. A compost bin can take up very little garden space because it can be placed in an area that isn't normally suited to gardening...behind your garage, along the side of your house, or a space that won't get much light. The truth is, if done correctly (very easy to do), no one will ever know you're saving a bunch or rotting organic material right around the corner...that's the beauty of composting!

Another benefit of composting is it actually helps reduce work and save money by allowing you to place all of your leftover organic matter in one location without needing to separate it, take it to a dump, pack it up in expensive lawn bags, or put it out for trash collection. You not only save time and energy, but you end up with an incredible organically enriched mulch that would normally cost you money to purchase from your local garden center or nursery. Composting not only benefits your garden but the whole planet as well. There are so many options for making and using compost, it is most likely there is one that will work for you.
